Venus, Taurus and the Empress in Traditional Tarot. By Caroline, Dublin Tarot Reader

Today, a little bit about The Empress in traditional Tarot.

The Empress is strongly associated with Venus and the sign of Taurus. Understanding Venus in astrology and its home sign of Taurus together with Libra, is a perfect starting point for understanding The Empress.

The Empress is the 3rd card of the Major Arcana - coming after The Fool (0), The Magician (1), High Priestess (2).

The Empress (3) comes right before The Emperor (4).

She is the first time the Major Arcana reveals a purely earthy archetype and she comes in the form of an adult woman: fertile, resplendent, and connected fully to the natural world.

Before her, The Fool is a carefree child, naive and innocent, yet filled with curiosity and wonder. The Magician connects to the invisible world of ideas to bring the first spark of inspiration, The High Priestess is a channel that intuitively connects with the unseen realms and her higher Self to translate spiritual messages like the Oracle of Delphi - and then, we have the Empress, strongly rooted in her body, connected to the Earth. Fertility is the ultimate manifestation of creativity - birthing and nourishing new life, and this is reflected back in the fertile landscape the Empress is pictured within.

The Empress in The Ryder Waite Tarot is seated in a landscape of crops, suggesting growth and abundance. Her luxurious dress featuring pomegranates suggest ripe sexuality as well as fertility. She is the epitome of Taurus energy: grounded, stable and deeply sensual. She is the divine feminine and counter point of the Emperor who, featured in a structured realm, represents the stability and ability to contain.

As Venus planet is exalted in Pisces, The Empress also suggests the emotional depth represented by water signs.

Indeed, the Empress, to my mind, is a mix of all the archetypal Queens of the Tarot court cards.

As well as holding the emotional richness of the Queen of Cups, she is the patient, stable Mother Earth archetype of the Queen of Pentacles and the passion, charisma, vitality and artistic creativity of the Queen of Wands. We also know that to truly possess all these gifts, she must also be able to lay down boundaries that are as clear and undeniable as The Queen of Swords: How else can she protect her inner sanctuary, the fertile garden of her psyche? In that sense she is the archetypal divine feminine, the force of nature that finds her counterpoint in the containment of the Emperor.

The Empress Reversed: The Shadow Side

When The Empress is reversed...

In a traditional reading if she is reversed, her natural flow of abundance, stability, and fertility becomes blocked or distorted. The shadow side of this archetype reveals itself in a few ways.

The Hollowed-Out Cup (Depletion).

In upright positioning The Empress nourishes others from a full emotional and creative reservoir. When reversed, she gives until she is entirely bankrupt (6 of Pentacles), sacrificing her own boundaries and leaving her emotional cup bone-dry.

The Smothering Cage (Control masked as Protection).

Instead of allowing natural growth and freedom, the shadow Empress can become overprotective, anxious, or codependent. She turns her nurturing nest into a tight, restrictive cage, treating those she loves like dependent assets rather than allowing them their freedom.

Disconnection from the Body and Over-indulgence

Escaping the body in various ways - through neglect or over indulgence - which in itself and taken to an extreme, is also a form of neglect. The grounding Taurus energy snaps. The mind overrides the physical self, creating cycles of overthinking, emotional fatigue, or physical stagnation where protective natural instincts are lost.

Creative Blockage.

The fertile landscape freezes. Plans stall, inspiration dries up.

Crucially, it is important to remember that The Empress is the ultimate Venus woman. She is not Persephone, both sunny Spring maiden and Queen of the Underworld, nor is she Lilith operating powerfully from the shadow of her psyche.

To sum up, The Empress archetype when upright and in her healthy expression exists entirely in the sunshine. She is a radiant archetype of visible abundance, self-worth, and natural sovereignty.
